| After the Curtiss JN-4 Jenny, the Thomas-Morse S-4 Scout is one of the better known American World War I era biplanes. It was unique in that it was the first airplane built as an advanced trainer for pursuit pilots. Most foreign governments used obsolete or war-weary airplanes for training, but since the United States had no old airplanes to work with, it had to come up with a different arrangement.
